Sanctions against Belarus
Huge damage, little effect
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
The presidential election and subsequent public protests in Belarus have led to a significant deterioration in relations between official Minsk and the West since 2020. The United States, the European Union, and a number of other countries have imposed sweeping sectoral and blocking sanctions on key Belarusian companies, state entities, officials, and businessmen. The sanctions are hurting the Belarusian economy. At the same time, they have so far had little or no political effect, and they can of course have undesirable consequences, such as accelerating the integration of Russia and Belarus.
