In a Stranglehold
Russia’s Media Landscape under Pressure
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
For more than a decade, independent media around the world have been in a deep economic crisis. In Russia, this is exacerbated by heavy political pressure. During the last ten years, numerous critical journalists and editors have been dismissed, television channels and radio stations closed and newspapers suspended. The reason always seems to be economic in nature. In fact, the state has systematically restricted means of independent financing. Any media outlet, that wants to survive, has to be loyal to the Kremlin. Whoever refuses is marginalised.
