Abstract
Moscow’s open intervention in Syria at the end of September 2015 came as a surprise to many observers. However, it fits in with President Vladimir Putin’s policies in recent years. Among other things, it is to strengthen ally President Bashar Assad in the civil war, to limit or push back perceived Western influence, and to demonstrate that “without Russia not a single global political problem” can be solved.
