Abstract
Before the autumn of 2013, Ukraine hardly mattered in the German media. The repressive policies of Viktor Yanukovych’s regime and the growing discontent among the population interested few editorial staffs. The European Union’s negotiations with Ukraine on an association agreement went largely unnoticed. Only with the Euro-maidan protest movement, the annexation of the Crimea, and the precarious developments in eastern Ukraine did demand for reporting and analyses on the situation in Ukraine increase. However, the media have shown themselves only partially up to the task. The structural deficits are too serious.
