Europe’s Wild East
Experiences with Violence in East Central Europe 1917–1923

Abstract
In western historiography and memory, the successor struggles of the First World War in East Central Europe are often ignored. In the collective memory of East Central European societies, they are singular sagas of heroism in the struggle for independence. As a result, the regional and international entanglement of these military engagements and the experiences with violence endured by the inhabitants of Europe’s “wild east” between 1917 and 1923 slip out of sight.
