Russian Art from the Spirit of the First World War

Abstract
The First World War is hardly present in Russia’s collective memory. Even in art, it seems to have barely left any traces. Only since the end of the Soviet Union, has the memory of that conflict been resuscitated. In retrospect, it is seen that many contemporaneous artists – many of them participants in the war – had by all means concerned themselves with those events. The works on offer range from Lubki prints, to traditional battle paintings undertaken by “embedded artists”, to the radically reduced, dynamic use of forms found in avantgarde art.
