Abstract

After the overthrow of the dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu, the memory of violence, oppression, and hardship dominated the image of the communist era in Romania. But no light was shed on these crimes, because communist cadres from the second tier were in power. Confronting the past has still made little progress. However, the notion of the 1970s as a golden age of economic prosperity has moved to the centre of Romanians’ collective memory of the communist era.
