Abstract

From 1917 to 1991, the communist regimes were the incarnation of a universal claim on the transformation of world society and its state order. The economic order, the political system, and international relations were to differ fundamentally from the capitalist form of society. As the belief in the global-historical superiority of communism waned, and as the Soviet Union’s global-political claim for military parity increasingly outstripped the performance of its rigid planned economy, the impulses that had driven communism began to ebb.
