Abstract

In Poland’s multi-ethnic Second Republic, an important role was allotted social and political affiliations as well as ethnic boundaries. A dispute concerning Zygmunt Szaja Silbiger, the Jewish vice president of the south-eastern Polish town of Tarnów, illustrates how ethnicity in the mid-1930s was increasingly politicized, while traditional multi-confessional and polyethnic ties fell by the wayside.
