“Why Not Break Out in Tears?”
Włodzimierz Nowak on the Art of Reportage
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
With his reportages on German-Polish relations, Włodzimierz Nowak has found his own style. His stories are tight, laconic, and unsparing. Some seem disturbing. Looking back on Mein Warschaukoller, which is about a Wehrmacht soldier who helped put down the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, Nowak discusses the art of questioning and the art of listening, reveals what he hates about his profession, and admits that he has sometimes caught himself calling himself a reporter and still not knowing life.
