Abstract
The 1991 Treaty on Neighbourly Relations is one of the most important events in the history of German-Polish relations. In a difficult international and domestic constellation, it helped to pave the way for Poland’s accession to the European Community and to stake out the framework for cooperation and integration. But there are still shortcomings. Germany’s support for its own Polish-speaking population is inadequate. And the problem of German cultural assets that were stored in Poland during the war remains unsolved. Nonetheless, the treaty should serve as an example for the reorientation of bilateral relations in Europe.
