Promoting Reading
The Adventures of the Book Market in Poland
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
At first glance, the Polish book market has been “Europeanised”. International bestsellers as well as pseudo-self-help guides by prominent television personalities dominate the trade. Nevertheless, there are peculiarities to the Polish market. Educational publishers have the highest turnover, the distribution system is poor, and most bookstores balance on the breadline. Libraries are closing. This impedes access to books. The biggest problem is the decline of reading culture. It has assumed proportions that raise concern: it is time for a national program to promote literacy.
