Cruel and Puzzling
Contemporary Hungarian Literature
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
The political changes in Hungary have brought about no similar radical change in literature. The literary about-face came well before these changes in the political system: texts that were both very advanced in terms of form and non-ideological had come into being already in the 1970s and 1980s. The range of content has expanded since 1989. Formerly taboo subjects are now taken for granted. The juxtaposition of traditional, modern, and post-modern narrative forms, as well as an interest in national history, is typical of contemporary Hungarian literature.
