The Stranger in the Mirror
Images of Hungary and Germany
Deutsche Fassung
Abstract
A longitudinal cross-section of history extending eight centuries reveals the national stereotypes that the Hungarians and the Germans have of one another. Stereotypes function to set apart and to establish identity. The image of the other betrays a great deal the image of oneself. Stereotypes vary according to political situation and cultural demands. A neighbour is sometimes a role model, sometimes an enemy.
