Confronting Stalinist Crimes

Abstract

The 1932-33 Famine was among the major “white spots” of Kazakhstan’s Soviet historiog-raphy. Since independence, this disaster has become the subject of historical research – also as a national project. The Famine was long explained as a “workplace accident” or as a “violation of Leninist principles.” Now, with growing distance to the Soviet era, Famine is being interpreted as a part of the violent levelling and disciplining policy of the totalitarian Stalinist system.
